Royal Court Theatre
MIDNIGHT MOVIE
Review by Poppy
Midnight Movie featured a very small cast of just 2 people, who communicated both through speech and through British Sign Language, which I found to be a very interesting aspect of the performance. Throughout the course of the play we learnt about the characters disabilities and what life was like to be deaf and have 2D vision. The play was about a person who could not sleep at night and spent her time trawling through the internet. By virtue of their endless scrolling they discovered numerous mysteries; such as a girl who was attacked by an invisible monster in a lift.

The play explored lots of individual stories, which were all very interesting and different. Between each story the actors always moved to a different position so that when they returned to the stairs (where the main action took place) it meant that it was easy to follow.
The play covered many themes such as peer pressure and cyber bullying and it was approached sensibly and sensitively. I especially enjoyed the use of technology to show the influence the internet has on young people
today. The director decided to use projection such as a computer screen and it selected text messages between a random guy on the internet and the main character and this was very engaging.
These visual effects brought the play to life and made it very interesting. The use of sound was also very important in the play as it helped to communicate emotions without speaking. The play featured live drumming and sound effects to fit the story such as water splashing and a metronome ticking. Lighting was also a key part of the play as they used blue gems which really drew out the cold nature of the play.
The lighting was also minimal which helped to emphasise that the play was taking part in the night. When the main character was talking online he stood behind a lit glass screen. This represented how he was talking through a screen and not face to face. They also used physical characteristics which helped to emphasise their emotions and at one point they started dancing with excitement and then stopped rapidly. This was very interesting and kept the audience engaged. I thoroughly enjoyed the play and I thought that is was very good
and that it was inclusive for everyone.
